Devotional - If you feel inadequate to finish the job
"Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God." — 2 Corinthians 3:5
Read time: 2 minutes
Hi Reader,
This year, a book that I ghostwrited will be published. It's the first time someone paid me to write a book—a dream come true.
If you had told me two years ago that this would happen, I wouldn't have believed you.
But before I even put the first letter on paper, imposter syndrome crept up on me, and anxiety washed over me.
Who am I to write this book?
Why do I think I can do this?
Reality kicked in: This person trusted me to write her life story, testimony, and message for the women out there!
On top of that, the first batch of copies would be at least 10,000!
My goodness, the responsibility I was given…
Suddenly, the happiness of being selected to write this story was quickly replaced by a feeling of inadequacy.
I ran to God: HELP ME! How will I do this?
2 Corinthians 3:5 was His answer:
Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for ourselves, but our competence comes from God.
During the entire process of writing my client's book, this verse was my steadfast foundation. Whenever I felt somewhat incompetent, I would speak out these words, praise God for His promise, and surrender the art of writing this book to Him.
I have often proclaimed that He uses my hands to write the story.
I have said He is the one who gives the words.
He is the one who gives the structure of the book.
It was what I needed to be able to finish the job.
I wrote that entire book because I have been made competent by God, not by my own strength, but by God's.
The whole experience humbled me. It made me realize that I can't do anything independently, no matter how often I've done it already. I'm reliant on God, and I actually love to be.
It forces me to lean on Him; ultimately, that's what I want for every business endeavour I undertake. Writing that book was good practice. 😊
So reader, if you are struggling with the imposter syndrome or feeling inadequate for what you've been asked to do, take 2 Corinthians 3:5 and make it the promise you believe.
You can do it!
The reviews of the first readers of the book were exciting. Her husband couldn't stop crying for 3 days because of how the book captured her voice, her story, and her message.
And I could proudly say it's thanks to our God since He used me and made me capable of writing it.
In the same way, God will use you and make you capable.
Blessings,
Jane
